Mud Cleaner Equipment

The efficient combination of desander and desilter for comprehensive solids control

What is a Mud Cleaner?

A mud cleaner is a solids control device that combines the functions of a desander and desilter into a single unit, typically mounted above a shaker. It effectively removes intermediate-sized solids (15-75 microns) that pass through the shale shaker screens but are too large to be handled efficiently by centrifuges.

Mud cleaners consist of hydrocyclones mounted over a fine mesh shaker screen. The hydrocyclones separate solids from the drilling fluid, which are then discharged onto the shaker screen for further drying and removal. This two-stage process provides superior solids removal efficiency compared to standalone desanders or desilters.

Key Functions of Mud Cleaners

How mud cleaners improve your drilling fluid system performance

Intermediate Solids Removal

Mud cleaners effectively remove solids in the 15-75 micron range that pass through shale shaker screens but are too large for centrifuges to handle efficiently. This intermediate particle size removal is critical for maintaining optimal drilling fluid properties.

Fluid Recovery

The combination of hydrocyclones and fine mesh screens allows for maximum fluid recovery while effectively removing solids. This reduces drilling fluid losses and associated costs.

Mud Weight Control

By removing fine solids that increase mud weight without contributing to viscosity, mud cleaners help maintain consistent mud weight and reduce the need for dilution.

Improved Drilling Efficiency

Cleaner drilling fluid reduces wear on pumps and other equipment, improves rate of penetration, and helps maintain wellbore stability by preventing solids buildup.

Space Optimization

Combining desander and desilter functions into a single unit saves valuable rig space compared to separate desander and desilter installations.

Cost Reduction

Mud cleaners reduce overall solids control costs by minimizing drilling fluid losses, reducing equipment wear, and decreasing the need for chemical treatments.
